Helping the local Community 

At Stepperiders we feel that it's important to put something back into the community.  In our visitors' ger there is information about the Lotus Children's Centre and a collection box.  Sometimes there are also crafts available for purchase (which have been made at the Centre), with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the Centre.  They rely entirely on donations and volunteers, and remember, a little money goes a long way in Mongolia! 

The Lotus Children's Centre, Yarmag, Ulaanbaatar

The Lotus Children's Centre was established in 1995 to help some of Ulaanbaatar's thousands of homeless children.  The Centre helps to give these children - some of them orphans, some of them runaways from backgrounds of violence and abuse - a chance of a better life.  Without Centres like this Ulaanbaatar's homeless children struggle for survival underground, using the city's hot water pipes for warmth in winter temperatures that can reach -40 degrees or more.

Aiming to keep families together where possible, the Centre also helps extremely poor families with income projects and food assistance.  The Centre not only provides shelter for the children, but also education and personal development schemes to help them into their adult lives.
